The Truth Behind the Resolution

January 6, 2013

December 31st: nothing but smiles as you celebrate the end of one year and look forward to what is to come. We celebrate life and those we love. Then, the dreaded January 1st comes around and we feel burdened. What on earth am I going to make my resolution this year? Generally, there’s a handful of standards we choose from, and they rotate year-after-year. “I want to lose weight,” “I want to find a new hobby,” “I want to spend less money.” Each year, ’round and ’round we go, and after maybe just a week, it seems that our resolutions are on the back burner, just waiting until next year. This can lead us to feel down and worthless, like we can’t accomplish our goals. I’m here today to tell you how you can change your view on resolutions so that you can truly feel that these goals you make for yourself are meaningful and possible.

There are four things to keep in mind when you are making a resolution:

  1. Re-define. First let’s start off by redefining “resolutions.” Instead of this weight on our shoulders that we feel the need to find something we want to change about our lives, let’s instead shoot for setting an intention for the year. It could even be as simple as adding positivity to your life. So, instead of these dreaded resolutions, let’s go for releasing a positive intention into the universe.
  2. Accept and love yourself. So many times we think of a resolution as something we want to change about ourselves. Try something new this year and go a little deeper. Be accepting and loving of yourself as you are. Be confident that where you are right now is exactly where you are supposed to be. If you have something you’d like to change, lovingly tell yourself and find ways to make it happen in a gentle way.
  3. Allow for “mistakes.” While I don’t really like to use the word “mistake” here, simply because it’s life, we are all bound to slip up every once in while and we don’t need to punish ourselves. When it comes to resolutions, we tend to base our self-worth on how well we follow through with our goals. There is always room for errors, so don’t get down on yourself if you get a little off track.
  4. Visualize your life. Be a dreamer! Imagine what your life will look like when you incorporate your intentions into your life. When you have a clear picture of what amazing things could happen, you’re more likely to stick with it.

Happy New Year everyone! I hope that each and everyone of you had a wonderful holiday season and are ready to start this new year filled with love and happiness.

What has worked for you? Do you usually stick with your New Year’s resolutions? How does it work for you? Let us know!
