It’s officially summer! I’m so excited to finally be able to say Happy Summer. At least to my friends in the Northern Hemisphere. To my friends elsewhere, Happy Sunday! 🙂
I remember looking forward to summer so much as a kid, particularly the time and space that summer created for me. I had time to play, to do what I wanted, and to read, learn and grow in my own way. One of my favorite summer pastimes was reading. My teachers would prescribe a summer reading list to prepare me for the next school year, and I was always so excited to see what would be on the list each year.
Even though I no longer have teachers giving me lists, I’ve kept this tradition going, but in this case, prescribing my own summer reading list, as a way to prepare me for the remainder of the year ahead.
I have felt strongly that this summer is all about expansion, growth, rejuvenation, strength, and creation, so I’ve put together a summer reading list that I know will fortify these intentions.

- The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins I changed much of my daily routine after reading Mel Robbins’ book. And based on the title, I was incredibly skeptical. The 5 Second Rule had me rethinking certain areas of my life and inspired me to make major life changes that I’m seeing the benefits of every day. I now listen to it on audiobook in the car for extra inspirational reminders.
- The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron I was given this book a few years ago when I first became interested in journaling as a self-care practice. I absolutely credit Julia Cameron and this book for making journaling a true habit of mine. I often feel that summer is a great time for creativity, and this is my favorite book to reference to get that extra spark to create.
- The Practice by Barb Schmidt This book is not new to any of my lists but I happened to find it in my apartment the other day and started giving it another read. The mindfulness tools prescribed are simple, but powerful and I find the key takeaways and teachings on meditation, living fully in the present moment are especially meaningful for me during the summer.
- The Universal Christ by Richard Rohr This book was suggested to me, as someone who spent much of my growing up years very interested in the Christian religion and faith. I think Richard Rohr beautifully defines how compassion, unity, and understanding are meant to be displayed in religion and society in these days.
- More Than Enough by Elaine Welteroth We had the pleasure of meeting and hosting Elaine at our most recent event in April. Her energy was pure joy and her stories are insightful, inspirational, and page turning. I know you’ll love this one and I think it’s a perfect summer read.
